Arsenal open 'instant contract talks' with key star after Champions League exit image

Arsenal’s exit from the UEFA Champions League after a bruising 3-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain has spilled into a fresh off-field battle - securing William Saliba’s future before Real Madrid move in.

Saliba, who signed a four-year deal with the Gunners in 2023 - without the option of a release clause - is tied to the club until 2027. But, the Gunners hierarchy are aware of Los Blancos making contact with his representatives.

As per French outlet L’Équipe, Real Madrid opened talks with Saliba's advisors in April, in an attempt to test Arsenal's resolve over keeping him in 2026, as he enters the final year of his current deal.

Sporting director Andrea Berta has now opted to accelerate his own contract discussions with the Les Bleus defender, after also starting preliminary talks in April, but the urgency has now stepped up.

Arsenal eye Valencia star as 'Saliba replacement'

Amid the swirling rumours over what could happen next with Saliba, Arsenal are building a contingency plan, with targets lined up, if he moves on this summer.

Mikel Arteta is reportedly ready launch a £20m [$27m] bid for highly rated Valencia centre-back Cristhian Mosquera, according to Spanish outlet Cadena Ser.

Mosquera has played 33 games in La Liga in 2024/25, helping Valencia to keep seven top-flight clean sheets, with his rate of one defensive block per 90 placing amongst the best in his position across La Liga.

The Gunners are open to making a formal offer to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season.
