Alexander Isak has made it known to Newcastle United that he wants to explore a move away this summer.

The 25-year-old striker was left out of the pre-season tour to Asia, with the official reason being a minor thigh issue, but according to The Athletic, the absence was his personal preference while discussions about his future continue behind the scenes.

Earlier this week, Newcastle expected Isak to rejoin the squad, but when this didn't happen, it raised fresh doubts inside the camp.

While the Newcastle hierarchy continues to state publicly that the player is not for sale, the club is now aware of Isak’s desire to assess his options.

The discussions regarding the Swedish international's contract were set to take place at the end of last season but have not progressed, and Isak’s camp has so far chosen not to commit to any long-term plans on Tyneside.

Isak joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022 and since has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances, including 27 last season, with him playing a key role in helping Newcastle win their first domestic trophy in 70 years.

Despite this, he wants to challenge himself at a higher level and has attracted interest from Liverpool, who could consider a bid that could set a new British transfer record.

Newcastle face pressure on multiple fronts as options narrow

With Callum Wilson now gone and both Liam Delap and Hugo Ekitike signing elsewhere, Newcastle’s attack looks stretched.

The Magpies have discussed a potential move for Yoane Wissa but talks have stalled over Brentford’s asking price and 18-year-old Sean Neave is the only natural centre forward available to Howe at this moment.

Isak was the second-highest Premier League goal scorer last season behind Mohamed Salah and has been central to Newcastle's attacking play.

However, if he decides to push for a move and Liverpool follow up their interest with a substantial bid, Newcastle’s firm stance could come under serious pressure.
