Eight-month absence could end as Manchester United star targets return image

Manchester United are hopeful that defender Lisandro Martinez could make his long-awaited return before the end of the year after spending eight months recovering from a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury, according to the Sun.

The Argentina international suffered the setback in February during United’s 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace and has not featured since, missing 33 matches across all competitions.

Martinez has resumed light outdoor training in late July and is still continuing to work through individual sessions at Carrington under the supervision of the club’s medical department.

According to the report, United are hopeful that the 27-year-old could be eased back into the squad after the November international break.

The defender has maintained close contact with the squad throughout his recovery and has even attended training sessions and team meetings to stay integrated within Ruben Amorim’s setup.

The Argentine player is an important player for United and since joining from Ajax in July 2022 for a reported £57m [$76m] has made 91 appearances for United, scoring three goals and registering three assists.

His aggressive style and comfort on the ball have made him a key figure in Amorim’s three-man defence where Luke Shaw has been covering on the left side this season.

His comeback would offer a significant boost for Amorim, who has dealt with limited defensive options since taking charge earlier this year.
