Manchester City have locked down one of their most reliable players for the long run. Ruben Dias has signed a new two-year extension that keeps him at the Etihad Stadium until 2029, with an option for another year.

The Portugal defender joined City from Benfica in 2020 for £65 million and has since become a rock at the back.

He has already played more than 220 matches for the club, winning four Premier League titles, a Champions League, the FA Cup and the League Cup.

Not bad for a player who turned up during Covid football and immediately turned City into champions.

At 28, Dias is still at his peak. He has worn the captain’s armband many times and remains one of Pep Guardiola’s most trusted men.

Yes, injuries slowed him last season, but whenever fit, he is the heartbeat of City’s defense. Fans will be glad to know the wall is staying put.

After all, you don’t just let your best defender walk away when you’re chasing more silverware.

What Ruben Dias said after signing new contract?

“I am incredibly happy today,” Dias said (via mancity.com). “I’m so proud to represent this great Club. City are where I want to be – at the top of the sport, competing for trophies. The club’s ambition aligns perfectly with mine and as a footballer there is nothing better than that."

“I love Manchester – it is my home now – and I love the Manchester City fans. Their support from day one has been absolutely unbelievable, and I appreciate them a lot."

“When I think about the trophies we have won and the way we have played our football during my time here, I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else.”

The club’s director of football, Hugo Viana, called Dias “a leader in the dressing room and on the pitch” and praised his professionalism.

City’s focus may now shift to sorting out futures of other stars like Bernardo Silva and John Stones, both with just one year left on their current deals.

But with Dias tied down, the champions know their defense will stay strong for years to come.
