Liverpool’s defensive plans for next season are already taking shape, and a new name from Spain is firmly on their radar.

With Ibrahima Konate’s contract running into its final year, the Reds are reportedly keeping a close eye on Barcelona center-back Ronald Araujo as a potential replacement.

Konate’s deal runs out next summer, and talks over an extension have yet to show progress. The Frenchman can negotiate with foreign clubs from January, and interest is said to be strong.

Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City are all reportedly watching the situation.

Liverpool would prefer to keep Konate but are preparing for the possibility of a departure.

Araujo emerges as Marc Guehi alternative for Liverpool

According to reports in Spain (via the Daily Briefing), Liverpool view Araujo as a realistic target if Konate leaves.

Barcelona tied the Uruguayan to a contract until 2031 earlier this year, but financial pressures could force their hand.

Sources suggest the Catalan club would consider offers in the region of €50–60 million (£43–52m). Chelsea and Tottenham are also believed to be monitoring the 26-year-old, adding extra competition for his signature.

Araujo remains one of Barcelona’s captains but is not a guaranteed starter under Hansi Flick. He has started only three of their first six La Liga matches this season, even though he scored in their recent 3-1 win over Real Oviedo.

Selling him would provide a welcome financial boost, though Barcelona would need a replacement before sanctioning a move.

For Liverpool, the interest is clear. The club has faced criticism in the past for allowing key players’ contracts to run down.

Konate’s uncertainty leaves them in a familiar bind, and Araujo’s mix of leadership and defensive strength makes him an appealing option if the Frenchman decides to move on.
