Premier League star sparks debate with surprising pick between Cole Palmer and Florian Wirtz image

It’s the kind of football debate fans love — and this time, it’s Granit Xhaka lighting the fuse.

The Sunderland midfielder has stirred up chatter by choosing Florian Wirtz over Cole Palmer, despite the Chelsea star’s electric rise in the Premier League.

Both players are considered two of Europe’s most exciting young attacking talents.

Palmer has been Chelsea’s shining light over the past two seasons, netting 37 league goals and often carrying the Blues on his shoulders.

But with the Englishman now sidelined with a groin injury, attention has turned toward Liverpool’s new recruit, Wirtz — even if his start to life at Anfield hasn’t exactly set the Kop alight.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Xhaka made his stance clear. “Between Palmer and Flo Wirtz, let’s say with Flo Wirtz, I had the joy to be with him for three years,” said the Swiss international.

“You will, a lot of English people will enjoy him because he’s unbelievable, not just with the ball, but the work without the ball.”

Xhaka, who shared the dressing room with Wirtz at Bayer Leverkusen, praised the 22-year-old’s mentality and drive.

“To be at this age and to have this attitude — to be angry if you don’t win a training session — that’s Florian Wirtz,” he added. “Hopefully not against us, Sunderland, but I wish him the best because he deserves that.”

While Wirtz hasn’t yet contributed to a goal in a Liverpool shirt, Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann came to his defense. “Even though he hasn’t scored any goals, he is still the player who creates the most chances in the Premier League,” he pointed out. “It’s not his fault if teammates don’t convert them.”

Palmer, meanwhile, remains on the sidelines and is not expected to return until November, missing several key fixtures for Chelsea.

That means fans will have to wait a bit longer for the next chapter in this budding comparison — and maybe another stats battle waiting to brew.

For now, Xhaka’s verdict has added fuel to the fire. One thing’s for sure — football fans love a midfield debate, especially when it’s sprinkled with a bit of Swiss spice.
