Jack Wilshere says he leaned on advice from Mikel Arteta before stepping into his first full-time managerial role.
The 33-year-old has been confirmed as the new manager of League One side Luton Town, replacing Matt Bloomfield, who was dismissed earlier this month after less than a year in charge.
Luton sit 11th in the table following back-to-back relegations from the Premier League and Championship.
Wilshere, who won 34 England caps and played more than 190 games for Arsenal, has previously worked in the Gunners' academy and spent time as a first-team coach at Norwich City.
Speaking at his unveiling, the former midfielder revealed the words of encouragement he received from Arsenal boss Arteta, who was a team-mate during his playing days in north London.
"About a year ago, I asked Mikel when he knew he was ready," Wilshere said.

"He laughed and said, 'You just have to jump in and swim as hard as you can.'
"He's done that really well and this feels a little similar. It's a different level but Arsenal wasn't a nice place when Mikel went in. The fans weren't sure what was happening and he built complete unity and trust in what he was doing."
Wilshere has previously spoken of his admiration for Arteta, crediting him with support at a difficult stage in his career.
"I've got a really big soft spot for Mikel," he told TNT Sports earlier this year.
"Then he invited me back when I was really struggling to find a club, and as he said, I was part of it, and he made me feel part of it.
"So, honestly, what he's done for this club, I'm so happy for him, so happy for the staff."
Wilshere's first game in charge of Luton will be at home to Mansfield Town on Saturday, before a trip to Northampton the following week.
