WORLD RECORD: South Africa's Matthew Breetzke scripts history with half-century in 2nd ODI against England image

South Africa's tour of England has already delivered plenty of talking points but Thursday at Lord's brought a landmark moment in ODI history. Matthew Breetzke - who only made his debut earlier this year, continued his remarkable run of form with another half-century.

The innings didn't just steady South Africa in a tricky situation; it also placed the 26-year-old firmly in cricket's record books.

Matthew Breetzke breaks Navjot Sidhu's long-standing record

Breetzke became the first player in ODI history to score five consecutive fifties in his first five innings. His scores of 150, 83, 57, 88 and now 85 against England have pushed him past India's Navjot Singh Sidhu - who held the earlier benchmark of four straight half-centuries at the start of an ODI career.

Breetzke also leads the chart for most runs after five ODI matches, with 463 runs. That puts him ahead of Tom Cooper (374), Allan Lumb (328), Sunil Ambris (316) and even South Africa captain Temba Bavuma (309).

On the day, Breetzke struck 85 off 77 balls before Jofra Archer dismissed him. His innings included a crucial 147-run stand with Tristan Stubbs - lifting South Africa from 93/3 to a commanding position.

Since his record-breaking debut 150 in February, Breetzke has not scored below 57. With an average of 92.60 and a strike rate of over 100, he has set an extraordinary standard for a newcomer.

Few batters in modern cricket have started this strongly and the Proteas will hope his form continues deeper into the series. South Africa already lead 1-0 in the three-match contest and Breetzke's dream run could well be decisive in sealing the series.
