As the spectre of a clash between the IPL (Indian Premier League) and the general elections looms, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed the schedule of the IPL 2024 season in India.

The BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has confirmed to Cricbuzz that the entire season of the upcoming IPL 2024 will be scheduled in India, despite the occurrence of general elections later in the year.

The Election Commission of India has unveiled the election schedule on Saturday, March 16 at 3 pm. Following the announcement, Shah has denied all claims and reports about the travel of the IPL foreign land (Dubai, the UAE).

What did Jay Shah say about the staging of IPL 2024 amidst general elections?

BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed to Cricbuzz that the entire league will be held in India. He denied all claims of moving the league to overseas land, to complete the latter stages of the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League.

However, prior to the confirmation by the BCCI Secretary, The Times of India  reported about the possibility of the IPL 2024 being shifted to the United Arab Emirates. As per the TOI, a delegation of top BCCI officials was present in Dubai, exploring the feasibility of staging IPL matches in the UAE.

What was BCCI's contingency plan for IPL 2024?

"The Election Commission of India will announce the election schedule on Saturday at 3 pm. After that, the BCCI will decide whether IPL matches should be moved to Dubai. Currently, a few top BCCI officials are in Dubai to explore the possibility of organizing the second half of the IPL in Dubai," sources said to TOI.

The notion of relocating the IPL due to election-related scheduling conflicts is not unprecedented. In 2014, the first half of the IPL season was held in the UAE for similar reasons. Now, with the BCCI having already announced the schedule for the first half of IPL 2024, comprising 21 matches culminating on April 7 in Lucknow, discussions regarding the second leg's venue have gained urgency.

The IPL is slated to commence this season with a clash between the Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 22 in Chennai. The potential move to Dubai echoes the precedent set in 2020 when the IPL was held in the UAE due to the COVID-19 pandemic, utilizing venues in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah to ensure the smooth conduct of the tournament.

What is the format of IPL 2024?

A total of 10 teams will participate in IPL 2024. Each team plays the other nine in a round-robin home and away format with the top four qualifying for the play-off. The top two teams in the league will compete in the Qualifier 1 and the winner will make it to the final. The third and fourth-placed teams will compete in an Eliminator. The winner of the eliminator will compete against the team who lost the Qualifier 1 in a Qualifier 2. The winner of Qualifier 2 will then make it to the final.

What time will the matches start in India?

Most of the matches will start at 7:30 pm IST except for doubleheaders which will see the first match starting from 3:30 pm IST.
