"Those two will help him" - West Indies legend expects Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to help Shubman Gill grow as India captain image

Shubman Gill is stepping into one of the toughest roles in world cricket of leading the Indian ODI team. The young opener is now taking over the 50-over format from Rohit Sharma after replacing the veteran cricketer as leader of the Test side in the summer.

As India prepare for their limited-overs series against Australia later this month, former West Indies pacer Ian Bishop believes Gill won’t be alone in this journey.

He feels the presence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the dressing room will be crucial in shaping Gill into a strong leader.

What did Ian Bishop say about Shubman Gill’s captaincy?

Speaking to PTI Videos, Ian Bishop said that Shubman Gill has the right attitude and talent to be a good captain but he still needs time to learn and improve. He added that Gill is not yet a complete leader, but with experience, he will grow both as a captain and as a batsman.

Bishop also said that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be there to guide and help Gill during this phase and their support will make his journey easier. He believes Gill’s understanding of tactics and leadership will get better over the next few seasons.

"He’ll be fine. Those two guys will help him along the way. He will grow in the job. He’s nowhere near the finished article. People have to give him that chance to grow as a captain, and as a batsman, he will grow as well," said Bishop.

"He has the temperament and the skill to lead, but the growth in captaincy and tactics is something that will take a couple of seasons to grow into. I’m sure he’ll get help from the two veterans," he added.

The series against Australia, starting October 19 in Perth, will be Gill’s first real test as India’s full-time ODI skipper.
