Sydney Thunder confirm Ashwin's unavailability for BBL 15
In a press release, the Sydney Thunder announced that Ashwin's recent knee surgery has ruled him out of the 2025/26 campaign. While the injury prevents him from taking the field, the franchise said it continues to work with the off-spinner on a "revised schedule of activity" depending on his recovery.
"Everyone at Sydney Thunder was devastated to learn of Ash's knee injury that has ruled him out of BBL|15. From the moment we first spoke with Ash, his commitment was clear. We hope to welcome him into our dugout later in the season and build a long-term relationship," said General Manager Trent Copeland.
Sydney Thunder also assured fans that despite Ashwin's absence, their squad remains strong enough to contend for the title.
Ashwin expresses disappointment over missing BBL 15
Reacting to the development, Ashwin expressed disappointment but said his focus is now on recovery.
"I am gutted to miss BBL|15. My focus now is recovery and coming back stronger. I am grateful to the Thunder family and fans for the warmth they have already shown me. If rehab and travel plans allow, I would love to be around the group later in the season and meet the fans," Ashwin said.
Ashwin's withdrawal is a blow to Sydney Thunder's promotional plans, but both parties appear committed to maintaining their partnership beyond this season.
Sydney Thunder begin their BBL 15 campaign against Hobart Hurricanes on December 16, followed by the Sydney Smash at Engie Stadium on December 20.
