India's squad for the Asia Cup 2025 is out and the big question now is about the opening combination. With Suryakumar Yadav leading the side and Shubman Gill named as vice-captain, the team has several options at the top of the order.
Abhishek Sharma is also in the mix while Sanju Samson has also made his way performances. As the tournament in the UAE approaches, the focus has shifted to who will partner Gill in India's opening slot.

Shubman Gill returns to T20 setup as vice-captain
Suryakumar Yadav confirmed that Gill's role has always been central to India's T20 plans. The opener had missed several white-ball games due to his Test commitments but the selectors made it clear he remains first choice.
“When I was leading, he (Gill) was vice-captain. So that's where we started a new cycle for the T20 World Cup," Suryakumar said at the press conference.
With the Asia Cup being India's first major T20 tournament since last year's World Cup, Gill's inclusion as vice-captain signals his importance in the side's roadmap.
Sanju Samson's opportunity creates selection dilemma
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that Samson was given chances earlier because Gill and Jaiswal were not available. However, both Gill and Abhishek are now in the squad which means the management has multiple opening options.
"Gill has two options. The captain and the coach will look at the conditions and make the call," Agarkar said.
Abhishek Sharma adds another layer to India's options
Abhishek Sharma's inclusion has given India flexibility. His ability to score quickly in the powerplay adds a different dimension compared to Gill's or Samson's role.
With three potential openers, India's approach may change depending on match-ups and opposition. As India prepares for its Asia Cup opener on September 10, the opening combination will be one of the most closely watched decisions.
