On Saturday, the Indian selection committee announced that Shubman Gill is set to replace Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain, months after the same happened in Tests.

Although Rohit Sharma features in the squad, which will tour Australia later this month as a batter, the decision has created a stir among cricket fans and media regarding his place for the World Cup 2027, considering his age.

With questions around Sharma's future in the only format that he plays now, TSN takes a look at what the player believes the future holds for him and his ambitions as a player.

What did Rohit Sharma say about the ODI World Cup 2027?

When India last won the World Cup in 2011, the right-handed batter was still an active international player; however, he had faced a snub from the squad due to inconsistent performances.

Having won the T20 World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy twice each, the fifty over World Cup remains the final frontier in white-ball cricket for him.

During his conversation with journalist Vimal Kumar during the Indian Premier League season, the former India captain opened up on the disappointment of losing the final of the home World Cup.

"Jehen me bilkul hai. Bilkul [khelna chahunga]. Accha rahega agar aisa hua to. [The World Cup 2027 is definitely at the back of my mind, I would surely want to play it. It would be good if it [winning the World Cup] happens]," Sharma expressed.

After Gill took over the reins of the ODI format, it is likely that the selectors and management look to phase Sharma and Virat Kohli out ahead of the big tournament.

However, speaking of the merits, the duo hold a formidable record in the format are likely to be a part of the setup for the foreseeable future, with Australia, South Africa and New Zealand ODIs upcoming.

They are also likely to represent Mumbai and Delhi in the domestic One Day tournament, i.e., the Vijay Hazare Trophy later in December.

How has Rohit Sharma performed in World Cups?

Sharma has played three World Cups for India from 2015 to 2023 and has been a key performer in all three events. His notable performances came in the 2019 edition, where he scored five centuries and accumulated the most runs in the tournament.

The 2023 version of the Indian captain saw a different approach to his batting, as he scored at a swashbuckling scoring rate of 125.94 for his 597 runs.
