The West Indies cricket board has announced a 15-player squad for the upcoming two-Test series against India, starting October 2 in Ahmedabad. The tour, which will also take the team to Delhi, marks their first red-ball trip to India since 2018.

Big decisions were made, including the return of familiar faces and a surprise omission of a senior name.

Who are the key inclusions in the West Indies squad?

The selection committee has recalled left-handed opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul and middle-order batter Alick Athanaze.

Both have been chosen for their ability to face spin bowling in subcontinent conditions, a skill that will be critical against India’s attack.

Another headline call is the first-time selection of Khary Pierre, a left-arm spinner who has impressed in domestic cricket this season with 41 wickets at a remarkable average of 13.56.

He joins vice-captain Jomel Warrican and captain Roston Chase in the spin department, giving the team more options in conditions expected to help slow bowlers.

Which big names are missing from the West Indies squad?

The most surprising exclusion is that of former skipper Kraigg Brathwaite, who has 100 Test caps to his name.

Brathwaite was already left out in the final Test against Australia earlier this year and now has not made the squad for the India series.

Also not considered this time are Keacy Carty, Johann Layne and Mikyle Louis, who all featured in the last squad.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Gudakesh Motie has been rested ahead of the busy limited-overs schedule, which includes next year’s T20 World Cup.

What does the full 15-member squad look like?

The squad will be led by Roston Chase, with Jomel Warrican serving as vice-captain.

The batting group includes John Campbell, Chanderpaul, Athanaze, Kevlon Anderson, Justin Greaves, Shai Hope, Tevin Imlach and Brandon King.

In the bowling unit, pace responsibilities fall on Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Anderson Phillip and Jayden Seales, while spin duties will be shared by Warrican, Pierre and Chase.
