Rohit Sharma’s stellar hundred in Sydney has once again quietened the talk around his future in international cricket. At 38, questions about his retirement continue to circle, especially after his exits from T20Is and Test cricket.

But the former captain's recent form and fitness suggest he is far from done. His long-time mentor, Dinesh Lad, has now given some clarity on Rohit's mindset and future goals in the ODI setup.

Dinesh Lad backs Rohit to continue until 2027 ODI World Cup

Speaking to PTI, Dinesh Lad revealed that Rohit has no immediate plans to step away from one-day cricket. The Mumbai coach, who has known him since his school days, said the opener's recent performances showed his hunger and ability to perform at the highest level.

"There were talks that he was not performing, that he should stop playing cricket, but he played two good innings in the last two matches, 75 (73) first and now 120 (121*), and has shown he is still a top player who will still contribute to the country," Lad said.

Rohit's unbeaten 121 in Sydney capped off a strong series in which he was named Player of the Series, finishing with 202 runs across three matches.

Lad added that Rohit's success is rooted in belief and mental strength, qualities that have carried him through tough phases. According to him, Rohit's focus remains firmly on preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be held in South Africa.

"The only secret is his self-confidence. That's why he has not retired. He wants to play the 2027 World Cup and only retire after that," Lad explained.
