He had earlier overtaken Virat Kohli as India's highest-scoring captain in the debut series. Kohli had scored 449 runs in the 2014–15 tour of Australia, where he began his captaincy stint midway through the series.
Before Kohli, Vijay Hazare had scored 347 runs against England in a home series in 1952 and 10 years later Nari Contractor posted 319 runs against Pakistan
This is Gill’s first full series as skipper, and it couldn’t have started better. His aggressive yet composed knocks have helped India take a commanding lead of nearly 500 runs against England, with the second Test heading into its final day on July 6.
