Shubman Gill has gained respect and prominence as a leader in Indian cricket after a successful tour of England in his first assignment as Test captain since Rohit Sharma hung up his boots in Test cricket earlier this year.

Before being named Test captain and ODI vice-captain, Gill was also the skipper of the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL), earning valuable experience. He will also act as Suryakumar Yadav's deputy in T20Is during the upcoming Asia Cup.

While India currently has three captains for a format each, it doesn't look far-fetched that they hand over more responsibility to the 25-year-old to streamline the management decisions.

As the Asia Cup approaches, former England spinner Monty Panesar has also commented on the topic and vouched for Gill to be given the T20I captaincy soon.

Panesar calls for Gill to be named as a T20I captain

Suryakumar Yadav took over the T20I captaincy T20 World Cup 2024 after Rohit retired from the format. However, he is approaching 35 and was also seen as a short-term appointment atleast until the 2026 T20 World Cup at home.

However, during his conversation with India TV, Panesar felt Gill should be encouraged to take up all-format captaincy. Even more, the former England international wanted him to replace SKY as early as after the Asia Cup.

"Shubman Gill has great potential to captain India in all three formats. If Suryakumar Yadav doesn’t perform well in T20s or fails to win the Asia Cup, I think the selectors may move on from him and hand the white-ball captaincy to Gill. Once Rohit Sharma steps aside, it’s very likely that Gill will lead across formats," the former English bowler said.

Gill has previously led India in T20I as a stand-in captain during the series win in Zimbabwe, finishing with a 4-1 score line in 2024.

Following the Gujarat Titans' run to the IPL 2025 playoffs, he took over the reins as the Test captain and was able to guide the team to a tied series in England over the English summer, while leading the side from the front as he scored a mammoth 754 runs over five Test matches.
