Iyer’s recent message on social media confirmed that he is still in recovery process, giving a strong hint that a return to action may take longer than expected.
What happened to Shreyas Iyer during the third ODI against Australia?
During the third ODI against Australia in Sydney, Iyer suffered a serious injury while diving to take a catch. He was taken off the field right away, and later, doctors found internal bleeding caused by a damaged spleen
The situation was quite tense for a while and he had to spend a few days in the ICU at a Sydney hospital. Thankfully, his condition has now stabilized, but the medical team has advised complete rest for several weeks.
There was some confusion initially about whether Iyer had undergone surgery. However, officials clarified that he had a medical procedure called interventional trans-catheter embolisation.
This is a method to control internal bleeding by blocking the damaged blood vessel using a small catheter.

How long will Iyer be out of action?
Reports suggest that Iyer may be out for almost two months. This means he will miss the three-match ODI series against South Africa in December.
His availability for the home ODIs against New Zealand in January is also uncertain, as he might still be short on match fitness.
The management won’t want to rush him back, especially with the T20 World Cup squad selection coming up soon after.
