Indian Test team vice-captain Rishabh Pant's tour of England has been cut short after he suffered a leg injury on Day 1 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Pant was forced off the pitch after being hit on the foot while facing Chris Woakes' delivery. The wicket-keeper batter was visibly in pain as he received immediate medical attention on the ground before being carried off the ground in a golf cart.

The 27-year-old star batter was rushed to a hospital and after conducting tests, it was found that he had a fractured metatarsal.

However, despite the injury, Pant returned to the ground on Day 2 and scored a valiant half-century as India put up a fighting total of 358 runs in the first innings. Pant was welcomed with a standing ovation as the crowd at Old Trafford applauded the player's courage.

Pant did not take up the gloves in the remainder of the match as Dhruv Jurel performed the wicket-keeping duties from the bench and the player has now been ruled out of the final Test as BCCI has named N Jagadeesan as his replacement.

A day after the fourth Test, Pant took to social media and shared an update on his condition as he wrote: "Appreciate all the love and good wishes coming my way. It’s been a real source of strength. I will begin rehab once my fracture heals and I am slowly settling into the process. Staying patient, following routines and giving it my 100 per cent. Playing for the country has always been the proudest moment of my life. Can’t wait to be back doing what I love."
