R Ashwin goes unsold at ILT20 2025 auction as teams pass on $120k base price image

Ravichandran Ashwin probably did not expect things to turn out this way. The experienced off-spinner, who only recently said goodbye to IPL and international cricket, went into the ILT20 2025 auction with a starting price of $120,000.

But when the auctioneer called his name, none of the six franchises raised the paddle. In the end, Ashwin went unsold, a surprise for many given his long and successful career.

The moment has surprised many, as Ashwin remains one of the most respected bowlers in modern cricket.

Why did franchises not bid for Ashwin at ILT20 2025 auction?

The auction in Dubai gave each team a purse of $800,000 for fresh signings, along with the remaining funds from earlier retentions.

While Ashwin’s experience and class are unquestionable, teams may have been looking at younger T20 specialists who could play longer roles in the future.

His price tag of $120k also became a factor, as franchises tried to balance their squads with all-round options and power-hitters.

Despite his huge achievements, the market dynamics of franchise cricket meant the 37-year-old went unsold in the first round itself.

What is next for R Ashwin after this setback?

Even though he did not find a place in ILT20, Ashwin already has another T20 league to look forward to.

Just last month, the Sydney Thunder picked him for the upcoming Big Bash League season. He is expected to join them in the second half of the tournament, running from December to late January.

This comes after Ashwin officially retired from the IPL and international cricket last year during India’s tour of Australia.

With that decision, he opened the door to play in overseas leagues, something he had not done often before.

For fans, it may be disappointing to not see him in ILT20, but the Big Bash will still offer a chance to watch him compete in the shorter format.
