Explained: How PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi could lose ICC role after Asia Cup trophy controversy image

The 2025 Asia Cup continues to stir trouble long after its conclusion, with a fresh storm brewing around Pakistan Cricket Board chairman and Asian Cricket Council chief Mohsin Naqvi.

What began as a tense India-Pakistan standoff on the field has now escalated into a diplomatic tussle off it, following Naqvi's controversial decision to walk away with the Asia Cup trophy after India's refusal to accept it from him.

The move has reportedly triggered outrage within the BCCI, who plan to raise the issue at the upcoming ICC meeting.

BCCI to raise complaint over Asia Cup trophy incident

According to a PTI report, the BCCI took strong exception to Naqvi's conduct during the post-final presentation ceremony in Dubai, where India defeated Pakistan to lift the title.

After the Indian camp declined to accept the trophy from Naqvi, he allegedly carried it away himself instead of allowing ACC officials to hand it over later.

The trophy is now locked away at the ACC's Dubai headquarters, reportedly under Naqvi's instructions that it must not be moved or handed over without his personal approval.

"It remains to be seen what the long-term ramifications will be for the PCB or Naqvi because the BCCI is clear he didn't have any right to insist on handing the trophy himself to the Indian team," a source told PTI.

Mohsin Naqvi's ICC future under scrutiny

The incident has strained cricketing ties between India and Pakistan even further, and reports suggest the BCCI may push for Naqvi's removal as ICC Director.

As both PCB Chairman and Pakistan's Interior Minister, Naqvi's political positioning has also drawn attention amid heightened tensions between the two nations following the Pahalgam terror attack.

For now, the trophy remains in Dubai. Whether Naqvi faces formal censure or removal will depend on how forcefully the BCCI pursues the issue at the ICC's next board meeting.
