Pat Cummins' participation in the upcoming Ashes series opener appears in serious doubt. According to reports from CODE Sports and Fairfax, the Australian captain is unlikely to be fit for the first Test against England in Perth on November 21, with a lingering back injury delaying his return to bowling.
The scan results, while showing some progress, indicate that the fast bowler's recovery has not advanced enough for him to resume full training.

Pat Cummins injury update: Back issue delays return
Cummins has been dealing with a "hot spot" in his lower back: a stress-related area that requires careful management to prevent further damage. While initial scans brought some encouragement, he has yet to restart bowling, with only six weeks remaining before the Ashes begin.
Reports suggest his comeback could be pushed into December, meaning he may only feature in the latter stages of the series. If Cummins is ruled out of the opener, Steve Smith is expected to lead Australia, much like he did during the Sri Lanka series earlier this year.
Scott Boland could step in as the extra seamer alongside Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.
Pat Cummins says missing the Ashes opener would be devastating
Speaking last month in Brisbane, Cummins admitted it would be "devastating" to miss the start of the Ashes but emphasised his commitment to a full recovery.
"We'll be doing everything we can to be right for that. It's a big Ashes series, doesn't get much bigger. You're willing to take a few risks to play as much of it as you can," Cummins said.
The 32-year-old has been restricted to gym and cycling work as part of his rehab, with his return to bowling on both medical scans and how his body responds to the workload.
As of now, Cricket Australia has not issued an official statement confirming his availability or the extent of the injury, leaving Cummins' Ashes participation hanging in the balance.
