India's newest red-ball skipper, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the captain of India in the ODI format, taking over from Rohit Sharma for the ODI series against Australia.

Team India will travel to Australia for a 3-match ODI series, which will commence on Sunday, October 19th. Rohit Sharma, who led India to the Champions Trophy title earlier this year, will continue as a batter in the side.

Captain Gill and vice-captain Iyer to lead India ahead of 2027 ODI World Cup

BCCI's chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, announced that Gill will captain India in ODIs, with Rohit Sharma stepping down.

Gill had a wonderful start to his captaincy career for India. In his maiden Test series as the India captain, the young Indian side went on to draw the series 2-2 against England away from home. 

The batter also amassed 754 runs in 10 innings at a prolific average of 75.40, including four centuries and a double-ton in Edgbaston (269), which was also the highest individual score by an Indian captain. 

Rohit to continue as a batter for the Australia series

Rohit, who is currently 38, has an uncertain ODI future. The batter will be a part of the scheme for the tour to Australia, along with Virat Kohli. 

The Mumbaikar has led India to two ICC titles in the past two years, including a T20 World Cup last year and a Champions Trophy title earlier this year.

He additionally took India to the Finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2023 and was one of the leading run-scorers. Rohit last featured for India in the Finals of the Champions Trophy, and the fans are eagerly waiting for the return of their hero.

Shubman Gill (C), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KLRahul (WK), Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Nitish Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep, Harshit Rana, Md. Siraj, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna.
