Indian cricket stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's future in international cricket has come under the scanner ever since the Indian ODI squad for the Australia tour was announced.

Last Saturday, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar named the roster for the 50-over format and the surprise came when Shubman Gill was announced as the captain of the side, replacing Sharma.

Rohit, who last led India to Champions Trophy win after 12 years earlier in 2025, was removed from the leadership role without prior notice.

Agarkar was tight-lipped on the team management's decision, but many believe that it was the beginning of the end of Rohit and Virat's international careers and the duo might not be considered for the ODI World Cup, which is less than two years from now.

Amid speculation over the legendary cricketers' long-term future, South Africa and Royal Challengers Bengaluru legend AB de Villiers has shared his view on the Indian duo's future, as his verdict sounded concerning.

Addressing the burning question, the Proteas icon said on his YouTube channel (via TOI): "It’s not a guarantee both of them will be there for that next World Cup. That's maybe part of the thinking when they made Shubman Gill the ODI captain. He has a good chance of being there, young gun, in incredible form and a fantastic leader."

What did Dilip Vengsarkar say about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's future?

Speaking to Mid-Day, the former India batter said: "Rohit and Virat have been great players over the years, but if you are playing just one format of the game, I believe the selectors need to take a call on this.

"You cannot know or judge the form and fitness of such players because they've had a long layoff. It's very difficult to assess their form and fitness."
