No Bronco test for Rohit Sharma? India captain's Yo-Yo fitness test date revealed image

The debate over Rohit Sharma’s fitness has once again come to the surface. After stepping away from T20Is and Test cricket, Rohit still remains India’s ODI captain.

But with new fitness rules being added for Team India players, questions were raised whether the 38-year-old opener will be able to match the standards.

Reports now suggest that Rohit will not take the newly introduced Bronco Test. Instead, he is set for a Yo-Yo Test later this month.

What is the fitness plan for Rohit Sharma?

According to reports, Rohit will undergo the Yo-Yo Test on August 31.

This test has been a part of Indian cricket’s routine for several years and focuses on measuring endurance levels through running intervals.

Unlike the Bronco Test, which involves longer shuttle runs and is known to be tougher, the Yo-Yo has been used before to check overall fitness of Indian players.

Why was the Bronco Test in the news recently?

The Bronco Test became a hot topic in Indian cricket earlier this month when new strength and conditioning coach Adrian le Roux introduced it for the team.

The test, mostly used in rugby, involves 20m, 40m, and 60m shuttle runs done repeatedly. Many believed it was too harsh for older players.

Former cricketer Manoj Tiwary even suggested that it might have been added to indirectly push Rohit Sharma out of the ODI setup.

Is BCCI planning Rohit Sharma’s ODI exit?

Speculation around Rohit’s ODI future has been going on for months. Since lifting the Champions Trophy in March 2025, he has not played international cricket.

Reports claim that the upcoming ODI tour of Australia in October could be his last series as captain.

It is expected that the BCCI will review India’s ODI roadmap after the Asia Cup before making a final decision. Whether Rohit retires on his own or gets sidelined remains to be seen.

The Yo-Yo Test may not be as tough as the Bronco Test but it is still considered a key benchmark for fitness in Indian cricket. For Rohit, clearing this test could silence some of the doubts around his fitness.
