New York's newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani made headlines after his historic win in New York's recently concluded mayoral election.

As the news of his victory went viral, the Uganda Cricket Board took the opportunity to make a stunning revelation about Mamdani's cricket roots.

It came as a surprise to many that Mamdani, who is popular for his political activism, once also wielded a cricket bat long before he entered politics.

Mamdani created history by becoming New York's first Muslim mayor-elect. He defeated both Republican Curtis Sliwa and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Who is Zohran Mamdani?

Zohran Mamdani is an American Politician who is the current mayor of New York City. He has been a member of the Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of America and has also served as a member of the New York State Assembly.

He was born to Mohammad Mamdani and the filmmaker Mira Nair, both of whom are of Indian descent. However, Zohran was born in Uganda, but his family settled in New York when he was seven years old.

Mamdani graduated from Bronx High School of Science and further received a bachelor's degree with a major in Africana studies from Bowdoin College in Maine in 2014.

Has Zohran Mamdani played for Uganda?

No, Mamdani hasn't featured for the Uganda National side. He, however, was part of their local development leagues during his younger days. 

Soon after he was elected mayor of New York City, Cricket Uganda made a surprising revelation about his past. 

"Yes, you saw that right! New York’s newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani (2nd from left), once smashed sixes for our Castle Development cricket team in the local league," posted on Cricket Uganda.

Mamdani played for the Castle Development cricket team in Uganda's domestic competitions. He is now being praised for his contributions to the sport, long before entering the political arena.
