Was Mohammad Rizwan sacked by PCB? Shaheen Afridi named Pakistan ODI captain for South Africa series image

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to strip Mohammad Rizwan's ODI captaincy, following the announcement of Shaheen Shah Afridi's return to the helm.

The decision came during the Pakistan-South Africa 2nd Test in Rawalpindi, where both the players are currently playing, as they look to white-wash the Proteas in the two-match Test series.

Afridi will take charge of the ODI side as their 32nd captain in the format from November 4 in Faisalabad for the three match ODI series against South Africa.

Mohammad Rizwan replaced by Shaheen Afridi for Pakistan ODI captaincy

Within hours after the end of the Stumps on Day 1 in Rawalpindi, the official announcement was made by the board to replace Rizwan as Pakistan ODI captain.

As per ESPNcricinfo, head coach Mike Hesson has been at the forefront of the decision-making process on this matter. Ahead of the second Test, Hesson reportedly had a meeting with the selection committee to discuss Rizwan's future as the skipper.

The PCB did not provide any explicit reason for the change in guard, but the recent official statement suggests Hesson's insistence of meeting with the selectors and advisory committee played a role in appointing a new captain.

Afridi has previously captained Pakistan briefly in a five-match T20I series in 2024 against New Zealand — which they lost 4-1. He was quickly replaced by Babar Azam a week later.

As of now, Pakistan will continue to have three captains in three formats, with Salman Agha's position as the captain also under the scanner after the recent Asia Cup disappointment.

What is Mohammad Rizwan's ODI captaincy record?

Rizwan led Pakistan in 20 ODIs and won 9 of them, while losing 11 matches. His tenure includes the disappointing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign at home, which ended in a group stage exit for the Men in Green.
