The Mumbai Cricket Association has announced plans to honour former India captain and selector Dilip Vengsarkar with a life-size statue at Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Stadium. The decision was made during the association's apex council meeting on Wednesday.

It will mark a significant recognition of Vengsarkar's contribution to Indian and Mumbai cricket. Vengsarkar - one of India's most elegant batsmen through the 1970s and 1980s, represented the country in 116 Tests and 129 ODIs.

His most memorable performances was against the West Indies and England, where his technique and temperament stood out during some of India's toughest overseas tours.

According to the MCA, the installation of the life-size statue will take place at Wankhede Stadium, joining those of other cricketing legends who have shaped Mumbai's rich sporting heritage.

The association described it as a fitting tribute to a player who has not only excelled for India but also served Mumbai cricket in multiple roles - as a player, administrator and mentor.

The MCA's decision continues its recent efforts to honour former greats who have significantly contributed to Indian cricket, both on and off the field.

MCA pledges Rs 1 crore to Chief Minister's Relief Fund

During the same meeting, the MCA also announced a donation of ₹1 crore to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund as a gesture of support towards the farming community. Additionally, Mumbai's domestic players will collectively contribute ₹25 lakh to the same cause.

With the Vengsarkar statue expected to be unveiled later this year, the MCA's initiative reinforces Mumbai's long-standing tradition of celebrating its cricketing icons.
