Considering the responsibilities that Gill has been given over the past few months, among the people concerned about it has been Mohammed Kaif, who feels everything is happening too quickly for the youngster.
Is Shubman Gill being overburdened with responsibilities? Mohammed Kaif shares his verdict
Before being announced as India's Test captain, Gill had already led the Gujarat Titans in two Indian Premier League seasons, also reaching the playoffs in 2025; however, losing the Eliminator against MI.
Pointing out his losses in the final three IPL matches under pressure with GT, Kaif felt the batter is not the final product in terms of leadership yet.
While speaking on his YouTube Channel, Mohammed Kaif felt the push towards leadership across formats is too soon for the 26-year-old.
"I think Gill will be overburdened with the captaincy because he is being handed all these responsibilities too quickly. It gets tough to handle when you get so much so quickly," said Kaif.
"Don't put him under so much pressure. He is already captaining in the Tests, batting at 4, vice-captaining in T20Is, and might get elevated to captaincy there; now you are giving him the ODI captaincy," he pointed out.
He further stated the importance of being mentored by a senior player before being given all the responsibilities, saying he should have learnt the nitty-gritty of the role from Rohit Sharma for another year before getting the full-time role.
Sharma will end his tenure as the T20 World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy winning skipper alongside reaching the final of the World Cup 2023.
