Yashasvi Jaiswal is starting to make the toughest job in Test cricket - opening the batting in foreign conditions - look far too easy. The 23-year-old left-hander followed up his century in the first Test at Headingley with a quick 87 on the opening day of the second match at Edgbaston.
His innings was not just another score. It is now the highest by an Indian opener at Edgbaston in Tests - breaking a 51-year-old record previously held by Sudhir Naik who made 77 in 1974.

The young southpaw is just 10 runs away from reaching 2000 runs in Test cricket. And if he does it in his next innings, he will equal the fastest Indian to 2,000 Test runs - currently held by Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag (25 Tests, 40 innings).

What stands out even more is how consistent Jaiswal has been away from home. His century at Leeds made him just the fifth Indian to hit a ton in his first Test innings in England.

But that was only one of several major milestones he has reached already in his short career. In 11 away Tests since his debut, Jaiswal has scored 899 runs in 20 innings at an average of 47.31: figures that are exceptional for any top-order batter, let alone a young opener.
He already has three centuries and four fifties in overseas conditions.

In 2024, Jaiswal set multiple records: most Test runs by an Indian opener in a year (1478), most sixes in a calendar year (36) and the second-highest Test run tally overall - just behind England’s Joe Root.
He was also part of India's victorious T20 World Cup 2024 squad and led Rajasthan Royals' scoring charts in IPL 2025.
But it is in Test cricket - away from home - where Jaiswal seems to be carving a legacy that's growing by the match.
