Italy pulled off a stunning result on Wednesday, beating a higher-ranked Scotland side by 12 runs in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Region Final.

The match took place in Voorburg, Netherlands, and it has now put Italy right on track to secure a historic T20 World Cup qualification spot for 2026.

The win means Italy now sits at the top of the group with two wins and a no result from three matches. They face a crucial final group clash against hosts Netherlands on July 11.

How Italy posted 167 vs Scotland in T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier

Italy opted to bat first after winning the toss and got off to a flyer thanks to an explosive innings by Emilio Gay. He smashed 50 runs from just 21 deliveries with two sixes and six fours in the powerplay.

Harry Manenti then held one end steady in the middle overs with a patient 38 off 38. Grant Stewart launched a late charge with an unbeaten 44 from 27 balls. Stewart's knock included three sixes and helped Italy finish with a solid total of 167 for 6 in their 20 overs.

Scotland fall short in 168-run chase despite Munsey’s 72

Despite losing an early wicket, Scotland appeared to be cruising, as George Munsey anchored the chase with a classy 72 from 61 deliveries. He and skipper Richie Berrington put on a 105-run partnership for the third wicket.

But with 16 balls remaining, Munsey fell and the momentum shifted. Manenti, who had earlier contributed with the bat, returned to steal the show with the ball.

He picked up all five Scottish wickets for just 31 runs and completely derailed their chase. Scotland could only reach 155 for 5 by the end of their innings.

What Italy and Scotland need to qualify for 2026 T20 World Cup

With this result, Italy, ranked 32nd in the world, are one win away from sealing a place in the 2026 T20 World Cup. A victory over Netherlands on July 11 will confirm their spot.

Even if they lose, qualification may still be possible based on net run rate, depending on the outcome of the Scotland vs Jersey match.

For Scotland, the loss is a major blow. They now face Jersey in what is a must-win encounter. Their earlier game against Guernsey was washed out, meaning they have less room to slip up.
