India squad for New Zealand ODI series: Mohammed Shami ignored as Shreyas Iyer returns as vice-captain image

India have announced their ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against New Zealand at home, starting January 11.

The series will mark the start of a busy white-ball schedule for the Men in Blue in 2026, which involves participation at the T20 World Cup in February as defending champions and co-host.

On Saturday, the BCCI revealed the squad for the ODI series against the Black Caps.

There were speculations that experienced pacer Mohammed Shami, who has been irregular in the national team since the 2023 ODI World Cup, could stage a comeback after a strong domestic performance across formats. However, the selectors did not want to experiment.

Shami last featured for the national team at the 2025 Champions Trophy, where he played a key role in helping India win the title after 12 years.

India squad for New Zealand ODI series

India's ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is nearing full recovery from his injury and has returned to the team for the New Zealand series. However, his selection is subject to fitness clearance. Captain Shubman Gill also returns from his injury after missing the South Africa white-ball series due to a knock.

Doubts were cast over Rishabh Pant's presence in the 50-over format as he hardly features in the starting lineup over KL Rahul, who is India's first-choice ODI wicket-keeper. However, Pant was given the final nod for the series.

India ODI squad vs NZ: Shubman Gill (C), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (WK), Shreyas Iyer (VC)*, Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, Kuldeep Yadav, Rishabh Pant (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal

* Shreyas Iyer’s availability is subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI COE.
