IND vs SA 2nd Test: South Africa win by 408 runs, record first Test series win in India in 25 years image

South Africa completed their first Test series win in India in 25 years as they sent the hosts packing for 140 runs in the second innings. After a narrow 30-run win in Kolkata, SA followed up with a dominant 408-run win in Guwahati on Wednesday.

It was a team effort for the visitors, who stamped their superiority in all departments against India. While Tristan Stubbs and Senuran Muthusamy shone with the bat, a brilliant all-round performance by Marco Jansen kept India at bay. Simon Harmer continued to torment India, and picked up nine wickets in the Test. 

After remaining unbeaten for 12 years at home, India now face the prospect of a second home defeat in just over a year, after the 0-3 loss to New Zealand in November 2024.

India vs South Africa 2nd Test: Day 5

12:37 p.m.: The Indian batting line-up could not stand up to Simon Harmer's craft and folded for 140 in the second innings. Ravindra Jadeja was the only Indian batter who offered some resistance, scoring 54 from 87 balls.

Harmer finished with figures of 6 for 37, and a total of nine wickets in the match.

After a superb fielding performance, Aiden Markram now leads most catches in a Test stats, with nine catches in Guwahati.

11:00 a.m.: South Africa are closing in on a famous win. They have reduced India to 90 for five as the teams break for tea on the final day. Simon Harmer has once again undone India with four wickets for 23 runs in his 19 overs.

Sai Sudharshan is unbeaten on 14 off 138 balls, Ravindra Jadeja is 23 not out off 40.

8:50 a.m.: India have a slim chance of saving the Test and even slimmer chance of saving the series. Trailing by 522 runs, India begin proceedings on the final day with Sai Sudarshan and Kuldeep Yadav at the crease.

Day 4 recap

4:00 p.m. India lose both openers and finish Day for on 27 for two, with 522 runs still to chase. While KL Rahul (6) was bowled by Simon Harmer, Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) fell to Marco Jansen.

2:43 p.m.: South Africa declare on 260 for five, setting India a target of 549 runs on a tricky pitch. It was another well composed innings by Tristan Stubbs, who was bowled by Ravindra Jadeja for 94 off 180 balls.

Jadeja was the pick of the Indian bowlers, with figures of four for 62.

1:20 p.m. Slow and steady. South Africa have dominated yet another session, pushing India further into the corner. The visitors went into lunch on Day 4 at 220 for four, 508 runs ahead of India.

It has been another disciplined innings from Tristan Stubbs, who is currently unbeaten on 60 from 155 balls. Keeping him company at the crease is Wiaan Mulder at 29 from 43 balls.

11:00 a.m.: India has slowed down South Africa's march, reducing the visitors to 107 for three as the teams break for tea. Tristan Stubbs (14* off 56) and Tony de Zorzi (21* off 28) are currently batting for the visitors.

After Ravindra Jadeja dismissed both the openers, Washington Sundar sent back the dangerous Temba Bavuma. However, the SA lead has stretched to 395 runs and with the pitch now assisting spin India face a daunting task.

8:50 a.m.: South Africa begin Day 4 on 26 for no loss, 314 runs ahead of India. They chose not to enforce the follow-on on Monday.

Day 3 recap

4:00 p.m. South Africa end the day on 26 for no loss in the second innings. Aiden Markram (12*) and Ryan Rickelton (13*) navigated the tricky last hour well and continued to keep India under the pump.

3:10 p.m.: India bowled out for 201  but South Africa refuse to enforce follow-on. The Proteas will bat now. 

1:20 p.m.: After a spectacular top order collapse, Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar have steadied the ship somewhat with their 52-run partnership.

India go into the lunch break at 174 for seven in 67 overs. Yadav has played 82 balls for his 14 while Sundar is unbeaten on 33 off 66 balls.

After a stunning innings of 93, pacer Marco Jansen returned to haunt India. He was the pick of the South African bowlers, with four wickets for 43 runs.

11:55 a.m.: India has come undone on a Guwahati pitch where South Africa batted freely. From 95-1 at one point, the hosts are down to 122 for seven and staring at the prospect of a follow-on. 

11:00 a.m. India in a spot of bother after losing four wickets in the morning session. Three wickets in 20 balls meant India went into tea break at 102 for four from 36 overs, with Ravindra Jadeja at 0* (3) and Rishabh Pant at 6* (3).

With some amount of wear and tear on the pitch, the hosts are once again looking uncomfortable against spin, especially against Simon Harmer.

After KL Rahul was dismissed for 22 by Keshav Maharaj, Yashasvi Jaiswal took charge and scored a half-century, the first for India in this series. However, a rising ball from Starmer saw him miscue a shot and Marco Jansen completed a superb catch. Sai Sudarshan, filling in for injured Shubman Gill, fell to Starmer for 15 while Dhruv Jurel was dismissed for a duck by Marco Jansen.

8:50 a.m.: India has a mountain of runs to scale in Guwahati. Yashasvi Jaiswal (7*) and KL Rahul (2*) will begin the proceedings for the hosts, who currently trail by 480 runs.

Day 2 recap

4:10 p.m.: India end the day at nine for no loss, 480 runs behind South Africa. 

3:19 p.m.: It was a long, long day in the field for India as South Africa piled on 489 runs in the first innings of the second Test in Guwahati.

Kuldeep Yadav got the final wicket of Marco Jansen, who missed out on a first Test hundred as he was bowled for 93 off 91 balls.

1:20 p.m.: Senuran Muthusamy scored his maiden Test hundred to guide South Africa into a position of strength. The 31-year-old's patient knock of 107 not out and Marco Jansen's quickfire 51 off 57 balls took SA 428 for seven (137 overs) to at the end of second session.

The only wicket to fall on Day 2 was that of Kyle Verreynne. A smart piece of bowling from Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant's quick reflexes saw him out stumped at 45.

11:00 a.m.: South Africa refuse to budge. Taking a cue from the top order, Senuran Muthusamy and Kyle Verreynne have dug their heels in and denied India a single wicket in the opening session of Day 2.

South Africa go in for the tea break at 316 for six after 111 overs, with Muthusamy not out on 56 (131) and Verreynne unbeaten on 38 (94). 

8:50 a.m.: India and South Africa positives from a solid Day 1 performance, setting up an interesting day of Test cricket on Sunday. 

Assessing the Guwahati pitch on Saturday, Indian assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said, "I thought it’s a massive contrast from the Kolkata pitch, for one thing. We were expecting a better wicket. I thought it was pretty lifeless, but I’ve just heard Tristan Stubbs say that it was quite hard to score as well. I think it was just good old-fashioned attritional Test cricket."

Day 1 recap

4:00 p.m. South Africa end Day 1 on 247 for 6.

India made a little more impact in the final session of the day, claiming four wickets for 91 runs. Spinner Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers, finishing the day on three for 48.

While most of the South African batters made a steady start, they could not pile on the runs. Tristan Stubbs was the highest run-scorer for South Africa, with 49 off 112 balls.

1:20 p.m.: It is slow going, but South Africa have patiently batted themselves into a strong position at lunch on Day 1 of the second Test. After losing two quick wickets, on the either side of the tea break, Temba Bavuma once again steadied the ship.

South Africa go into the lunch break at 156-2 with Bavuma 36 (86 balls) on and Tristan Stubbs on 32 (82).

Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton (35 off 82) had navigated the tricky opening phase of the second Test well for the visitors, giving them an assured start. While Markram fell to Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav had Rickelton caught behind.

11:00 a.m.: Breakthrough for India. The hosts get their first wicket at the stroke of tea as Jasprit Bumrah bowls Markram for 38 off 81 balls. After electing to bat, South Africa held strong in the opening session, scoring 82/1 in 26.5 overs.

In a first, a Test match will have the tea break before the lunch break. This is because Guwahati lies in the north east India and the sunrise is much earlier. Factoring that in, the India vs. South Africa match started 30 minutes earlier at 9:00 a.m.

Guwahati is hosting a Test match for the first time, and became India's 30th venue to host the longest format of the game.

08:30 a.m.: South Africa captain Bavuma won the toss and elected to bat.

Rishabh Pant became India's 38th Test captain. He is standing in for the injured Shubman Gill.

Ahead of the clash, India has a win probability 64%, while South Africa, on the other hand, have 27% chances of winning the game. The Test match ending in a draw has a very slight chance of just 9%
