India announces ODI squad for Australia: Gill to lead as Rohit, Kohli return with Bumrah rested image

Team India has announced their squads for the white-ball tour to Australia, which is set to commence on October 19th. The side will feature in a total of 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is, which would prove to be an ideal preparation for the World Cups coming up in the next two years.

Shubman Gill has been announced as the new ODI skipper, taking over from Rohit Sharma. At 38, Rohit's future in international cricket is uncertain, and looking at the bigger picture and the 2027 ICC World Cup, the selectors have gone ahead with a young captain.

Rohit Sharma, however, has retained his place in the side, and so has the maestro Virat Kohli, while Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the tour.

Gill announced as India's ODI skipper, Rohit and Kohli return

In a latest development, the Indian cricket team has seen a big change with Shubman Gill taking charge of the ODI setup. While Gill was handed the red-ball captaincy earlier this year, the ODI role now will commence a new era of Indian cricket.

Gill started off his captaincy career on a strong note, leveling the Test series in England, where he amassed more than 750 runs in 10 innings. With the ODI World Cup in just 2 years, the young man will have a crucial role to play in preparing the side for the crucial event.

"Firstly, it is practically impossible to have 3 different captains for three formats. We have to start looking at the 2027 ODI WC. It is a format that is played least now, so we don't get that many games to give the next guy to plan or prepare. We are still 2 years away, but it is a bit of a challenge with the ODIs. Our focus is on the T20 WC, but slowly, we are still starting to plan for 2027," said Agarkar on picking Gill as the skipper.

Shreyas Iyer, the IPL-winning skipper and the veteran Indian batter, has been named as Gill's deputy. Iyer was previously handed the captaincy role for the India A side and has now been rewarded for his good performances.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, on the other hand, will see a much-awaited return to International cricket after more than six months. The duo last featured in the Finals of the Champions Trophy earlier in March this year.

Bumrah rested, while the red-ball vice-captain Jadeja dropped

While most of the selections were on expected lines, India's red-ball vice-captain Ravindra Jadeja has been dropped from the ODI squad.

Jadeja played a crucial role in the Champions Trophy but has been left out of the squad due to more pace-friendly conditions. India opted not to go with two left-arm spinners, preferring Axar Patel over him for the series.

Washington Sundar will be India's other finger-spin option with Axar, who wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav will also join.

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the tour after a hectic month in which he played in the entire Asia Cup and also played in the two Test matches against the West Indies.
