Veteran Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has made it clear he is not done with Test cricket.

At 37, Lyon might be entering the twilight of his career, but he has no plans to walk away from red-ball cricket just yet.

In fact, the off-spinner has set his sights on some of the toughest challenges left in international cricket - winning Test series away in India and England, and helping Australia lift another World Test Championship title.

He has already won a WTC title, back in 2023 when Australia defeated India at Lord's. Lyon picked up five wickets in the match, including four in the second innings.

He was also part of the Australian team that suffered a defeat in the 2025 WTC Final against South Africa last month. Even as questions swirl about how long he will continue, Lyon has firmly shut the door on retirement - at least for now.

What did Nathan Lyon say about winning away against India and England?

The Australian spinner spoke openly about his desire to succeed in conditions that have historically challenged the Aussies.

"I've always said I want to win away in India. I want to win away in England," Lyon said.

He added that while those goals are long-term, his focus remains on the immediate tasks ahead. That includes the ongoing Test series in the West Indies and the Ashes at home later this year.

"We've got that opportunity in a couple of years' time, but we've also got to take it Test by Test and make sure that we're doing everything here in West Indies right. Then we've got a massive summer at home with the Ashes," he added.

Lyon has never won a Test series away in India. He was part of the Aussie team that retained the Ashes away in England in 2023. However, the series finished 2-2, with the Aussies retaining the urn thanks to their victory at home in the previous series.

Also, worth noting that Lyon had been injured in the second Test of that Ashes series and could not play in the final three matches.

Will Nathan Lyon play 2027 WTC Final?

Even though the next WTC Final is two years away, Lyon made his intent clear on helping Australia reach and then reclaim the mace back from the Proteas.

"But another World Test Championship Final would be on my cards for sure," he said.

Lyon currently has 556 scalps to his name and is the highest wicket-taker among active spinners. With only two Australian bowlers ahead of him - Glenn McGrath (563) and Shane Warne (708) - Lyon could soon become the second-highest wicket-taker for his country.

Where will the WTC Final 2027 be played?

The 2027 WTC final is scheduled to be played at the Lord's in London on the same venue as the previous edition in 2025.
