Winning a Test series in England is among the toughest tasks for any touring team. For India, only three captains have ever managed to do it.
And no one has done it since 2007. Now, Shubman Gill is set to begin his Test captaincy with exactly that challenge: a five-match series on English soil - starting June 20.

Gill takes over from Rohit Sharma - who retired from Test cricket ahead of the series. With India not having won a red-ball series in England in 18 years, expectations will be high.
And the pressure will be even higher. The team has won just one of their last eight Tests under new head coach Gautam Gambhir and this tour will be a real test of Gill's captaincy and India's transition phase.
Before Gill walks out for the toss at Lord’s, here is a look at the three Indian captains who have succeeded where many others have fallen short.
Indian captains who have won Test series in England
Ajit Wadekar - 1971
Ajit Wadekar etched his name in Indian cricket history by leading the team to their first-ever Test series win in England. India stunned the hosts 1-0 in a three-match series - winning at The Oval after drawing the first two Tests.
Kapil Dev - 1986
Three years after lifting the ODI World Cup, Kapil Dev got India to another landmark. This time in Tests.
India won the first two matches at Lord’s and Leeds - sealing a 2-0 series win. The third Test ended in a draw.

Rahul Dravid - 2007
Rahul Dravid remains the last Indian captain to win a Test series in England. India won the second Test in Nottingham and drew the matches at Lord’s and The Oval - taking the series 1-0 and lifting the inaugural Pataudi Trophy.
Can Shubman Gill join the elite list of Indian captains?
Since Dravid’s 2007 win, India have failed to win four consecutive Test series in England. Now, under Gill’s captaincy, the team has a fresh start and a new prize.
