Anil Kumble was first. Now, 35 years later, another Indian with the same initials: Anshul Kamboj received the Indian Test cap.

How many Indian cricketers have made their Test debut at Old Trafford, Manchester? 

Kumble and Kambok are the only Indians to have debuted in Manchester. His three-wicket haul in that match gave fans a first glimpse of what would become a historic career, including the unforgettable 10-wicket innings against Pakistan in 1999.

Kumble played his first match in Test cricket at Manchester in 1990 and picked up three wickets. It was the start of an iconic career that saw him become India's highest wicket-taker in Tests, finishing with 619 scalps.

Anshul Kamboj makes Test debut in 2025 IND vs ENG series

India went into the fourth Test at Old Trafford trailing 1-2 in the series and facing multiple injury concerns. Arshdeep Singh, Nitish Reddy and Akash Deep have been ruled out of the match.

That left the door open for Kamboj, who impressed in the nets and was seen in multiple chats with coach Gautam Gambhir and senior bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

After Kamboj was picked, he became only the second Indian ever to make his Test debut at Old Trafford.
