‘It's a pretty good gig’: McCullum keen to stay on despite Ashes debacle image

England head coach Brendon McCullum says he wants to remain in the role, while acknowledging the decision isn’t his to make as the tourists come to terms with yet another failed Ashes series down under.

Following comprehensive defeats in Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide, the best a battered England side can now hope for is a 2-3 series defeat.

While improved performances in Melbourne and Sydney may well save some face, it seems unlikely even that would be enough to save McCullum’s job following a series the Kiwi himself had branded as ‘the biggest of our lives.’

Certainly, the relentless English media has already moved on to debating who will replace him as Test coach along with, in all likelihood, England’s under-fire Managing Director of Cricket Robert Key.

‘I’m enjoying the time that I’ve got’ says McCullum

Asked if he would still be in charge when England takes on New Zealand in a three-Test home series next June, McCullum was non-committal.

“I don’t know, it’s not really up to me, is it?” He said, before explaining why he loves the job.

“It’s a pretty good gig, it’s good fun, you travel the world with the lads and try to play some exciting cricket and try to achieve some things.

“I’m enjoying the time that I’ve got with these guys and I think we’ve made some progress from when I took over to where we are.”

Whether that’s remotely enough to secure his future remains to be seen.
