The fourth Test between India and England ended with heroic efforts of the Indian batters, who batted for 5 sessions to pull off a draw from the jaws of defeat.
Washington Sundar was promoted to number 5, where he stitched a 34-run stand with captain Shubman Gill. More importantly, they played out nearly 20 overs before the latter was dismissed.
Later, Ravindra Jadeja joined Sundar in the middle with over two sessions left in the day and India having 6 wickets in hand.

The visitors did not lose any further wickets on the day and Ben Stokes eventually offered a draw with 15 overs left in the day.
However, the Indian batters declined Stokes's offer, and the England captain did not look happy and had a heated exchange with the batters.

When the optional final hour of the Test was left, and the teams had a chance to call it off, Sundar and Jadeja were batting at 80*(188) and 89*(173) respectively.
India refused to accept an early draw as the batters approached their well-deserved centuries.
Stokes did not like the visitors' refusal, and he questioned Jadeja about whether he would be happy hitting Harry Brook to get the hundreds.

However, India did not budge, and the southpaw duo ended with 101* and 107* respectively before accepting a draw.
This was notably also Sundar's maiden Test century and coach Gambhir made sure he had their backs in the press conference after the match.
"If someone is batting on 90 and the other is batting on 85, don't they deserve a hundred? Would they [England] have walked off — if someone from the England side were batting on 90 or 85?" asked the India head coach.
"If someone is getting the opportunity to get their first hundred, wouldn't you allow them to do it? They weathered the storm. It's up to them if they want to play that way. I have nothing more to say," he added.
