English batsman Joe Root has questioned the need for pink ball Test matches in the Ashes.

Speaking to the media ahead of next week’s day-night Second Test at the Gabba, the former England captain was asked whether he believed the Ashes needed day-night Tests.

“I personally don’t think so,” Root said candidly, before adding he understands why the Australians would be keen to play with the pink ball.

“It’s successful and popular here, and Australia have a good record as well so you can see why we’re playing one of those (pink ball) games.”

“A series like this, does it need it? I don’t think so, but it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be here either,” Root added diplomatically.

Day-night Tests were first introduced by the International Cricket Council in 2015 in an attempt to boost flagging interest in the five-day format of the game.

Since then 24 day-night Tests have been played around the world with 13 of those in Australia.

England has played just seven pink ball Tests over the past decade.

Root has featured in all seven matches and, given the retirements of James Anderson and Stuart Broad, is the equal highest pink ball wicket taker in the current England touring squad together with paceman Mark Wood who will miss the Second Test though injury.

Australia has won all but one of its pink ball Test matches.
