Mohammed Shami came back with a bang in domestic cricket as he kicked off the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 campaign with the Bengal cricket team on a bright note.
Shami, who was determined to stage a comeback to the Indian team after a long lay-off from the side, picked up 15 wickets in two Ranji games he has played thus far against Uttarakhand and Gujarat and has already scalped a few.
After missing out on the England Test tour and the home series against West Indies in October, the veteran fast bowler was hoping to stage a comeback to the national team from the South Africa series, however, he has once again been snubbed as BCCI announced their 15-man squad for the upcoming series on Wednesday.
Mohammed Shami's thunderous message to selectors
After starring against Gujarat in the second game, Shami had sent out a message to the BCCI selectors as he told reporters: "Yes, I knew this question would come. I’m always in controversy anyway. You people have already made me the villain! What else can I do or say? In today’s world, social media twists everything. My job is to perform well. Wherever I get an opportunity, I’ll give my best. The rest is up to God. Bengal is my home. Every match I play for Bengal is like a memory for me.
"As far as the pitch is concerned, we had asked for a green wicket. Our pace attack is one of the best in the country, so it’s only fair if we get a good surface to bowl on."
He added, "Coming out of a difficult phase and performing well gives a lot of satisfaction. The time after the World Cup was tough and painful. But then I played the Ranji Trophy, white-ball cricket, the IPL, and the Duleep Trophy. Now my rhythm is back to where it was before. I can clearly feel there’s still a lot of cricket left in me."

Fans speculate over Mohammed Shami's future after being overlooked for SA Test series
As soon as the India squad came out and it missed Shami's name, fans started speculating on social media that this was a clear message from the team management that Shami no longer fits in their plan for future.
Ajit Agarkar last month said, we would select Mohammed Shami in tests if he proves his fitness but there is no Shami in any squad. He is among India's all time greatest & mid cricketer Agarkar is treating him like if he is some gully level bowler.

🚨 Once again Gambhir & Agarkar proving Indian cricket selection is not a merit system but a Politics FC franchise 🤡

Mohammad Shami in Ranji Trophy:
14 wickets in 3 matches | Avg under 20 | Match-winning spells 🔥
Still not selected for IND vs SA Test series 💔#INDvsSA… pic.twitter.com/gfRwGNeuRw
Shami sir, you should just play Ranji because now these coach and selectors will not select you. 🥺

Even if Mohammed Shami takes 10 wickets in an innings in domestic cricket, the selectors will still not pay attention.
Do you think BCCI has ended his international career now?… pic.twitter.com/1w64LBQwN4
Seems to be the end of Mohd Shami, one of the finest the Indian cricket has ever seen.

Only Bumrah (42.7) has a better strike rate than Shami (50.2) amongst the Indian bowlers, who have played more than 20 Test matches.
Remember, Shami also played a fair bit of his cricket at…
So we can safely say this is end of the road for Mohd Shami. If 93 overs in 3 games and 15 wickets isnt enough you know selection committee is looking ahead. He isn't bowling more than 5 over spell.
