During a promotional event for clothing brand Devo, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh lightened the mood with a playful comment at Shubman Gill.
Dressed in a regal sherwani himself, Harbhajan joked about the youngster's life ahead: captaincy first, then marriage.
Harbhajan's quip grabbed eyeballs at the event, especially given Gill's recent rise in leadership across formats. Amid the laughter, his line struck a chord among fans already watching Gill's evolving career path.

Harbhajan Singh cracks joke at Devo event about Shubman Gill's wedding
At the Devo brand event, Harbhajan called out to those around him:
"We will make Shubman wear this sherwani at his marriage. First let him do the captaincy, then we will get him married. And yes, we will get him into Devo too"
In short, Harbhajan suggested to give the leadership test a go first, and marriage later.
Shubman Gill's captaincy across formats and big shoes to fill
Harbhajan's comments lands in a moment of transition in Indian cricket. Recently, Shubman Gill was confirmed as India's new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma.
He had already taken on the Test captaincy earlier in 2025 after Rohit Sharma retired from Tests. So far, Gill has not held full-time captaincy in T20Is.
Observers have pointed out that having a unified captain across formats helps maintain consistency in dressing room culture. Harbhajan's comment thus mirrors a wider conversation: whether Gill should consolidate captaincy first, then personal milestones like marriage can wait.
Given Gill's journey - taking over Test, now ODI captaincy, Harbhajan's jest may resonate as more than a joke. It's a reminder: expectations are high, roles are many, and he is in the spotlight early in life.
