A Baggy Green cap worn by Sir Donald Bradman could sell for upwards of one million dollars when it goes under the hammer on Australia Day next month.
According to Lloyds Auctions, the cap was worn by cricket’s greatest ever batsman during the historic 1947-48 home Test series against India which Australia won 4–0.
Significantly it was India’s first Test tour of Australia after gaining independence as a nation in August 1947.
Adding to mystique around the upcoming sale, Sir Donald’s Baggy Green cap is inscribed with two names ‘D.G. Bradman’ and ’S.W. Sohoni’ on the interior label.
“This rare gem was gifted to Indian cricketer S.W. Sohoni during the epic 1947–48 Australia vs. India Test series,” Lloyds Auctions explains on the official auction listing, saying the cap has remained in the family for over 75 years.
“Cherished in the family collection ever since, this cap links you to Don Bradman’s invincible era and a memorable exchange with the Indian squad,” it continues.
Bidding opened at $1 and has already passed $500, however given the cap’s place in Australian-Indian cricketing history, expectations are the winning amount could potentially top seven figures before bidding closes on January 26.
According to Cricket Australia, Sir Donald Bradman’s very first Baggy Green cap from 1928 sold for $450,000 back in 2020.
The record price for any Baggy Green belongs to Shane Warne—the legendary leg spinner’s only Australian cap was sold for $1,007,500 in support of emergency services following the 2019-20 bushfires.
