The Indian sporting fraternity celebrated massive successes in 2025. 

While cricket dominated the narrative with the women's team clinching their first-ever ICC World Cup, archery, para athletics, and javelin maestro Neeraj Chopra also had their moments of brilliance in the previous year.

The '1983 Moment' for women’s cricket

India’s women’s cricket team created history by lifting their first-ever ICC Women’s ODI World Cup trophy. In the final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, the Women in Blue defeated South Africa by 52 runs to script a golden chapter in Indian cricket.

After a brief rain delay that pushed the start by nearly two hours, India got off to a flying start. Opener Shafali Verma scored 87 off 78 balls to inspire India to an imposing total of 298 for 7 in their 50 overs. In response, the Proteas were bowled out well short, handing India a historic 52-run victory. Deepti Sharma was the pick of the bowlers with five wickets for 39 runs.

Neeraj Chopra Breaches the 90m Barrier

Neeraj Chopra might have won two Olympic medals, but the famed 90m mark remained elusive to the "Golden Boy" of Indian athletics.

However, that psychological barrier and his personal best were finally broken at the Doha Diamond League with a throw of 90.23m. However, he still finished second as Julian Weber bettered his score with a throw of 91.06m. 

Indian archers on target in the 2025 Asian Championship

In a historic performance at the Asian Archery Championships 2025, India won the men's individual and women's individual event for the very first time in recurve archery.

Dhiraj Bommadevara and Ankita Bhakat won their individual events, while the men's team, comprising Atanu Das, Yashdeep Bhoge and Rahul Pawaria, beat South Korea in a nail-biting final that went to a shoot-off after the scores were 4-4 to reclaim gold after 18 years.

India's first Asian triumph after eight years in hockey

At the Rajgir Hockey Stadium in Bihar, the Indian men’s team defeated defending champions South Korea 4-1 in the final. 

With this victory, India not only lifted the Asia Cup after a gap of eight years but also sealed their spot in the 2026 Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands. Dilpreet Singh scored a brace, whereas Sukhjeet Singh and Amit Rohidas netted the other two goals. It was India's fourth Asian Cup title. 

India's best show in world para-athletics

India hosted the World Para Athletics Championships for the very first time and put up their finest performance to date on the global stage in the national capital.

India finished with six gold, nine silver and seven bronze medals. Sumit Antil was the superstar of the tournament as he completed his "hat-trick" of world titles in the F64 Javelin throw segment with a score of 71.37m.
