India took on arch-rivals Pakistan in their first match of the Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 stage on Sunday, September 21, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Sanju Samson has been India's first-choice wicket-keeper in T20Is for over a year now and has done a fairly good job opening the innings alongside fiery left-arm batter Abhishek Sharma.

His position in the team, however, came under the scanner after BCCI picked Shubman Gill in the Asia Cup squad and made him the vice-captain.

Gill's inclusion in the team and his appointment as a deputy to Suryakumar Yadav were a clear indication that the opening slot will now go to the Gujarat Titans star.

Ahead of the tournament opener against UAE, there were speculations on whether the team management would play Sanju in the middle-order or would they go ahead with Jitesh as the team's first-choice custodian.

However, the Kerala-born star has featured in each of India's group stage matches and finally got to bat against Oman earlier this week, where he scored 56 off 45 balls and was handed the Man of the Match award for the game-winning knock.
