India’s upcoming five-Test tour of England will start from June 20 onwards. It is shaping up to be a defining series for the team’s new red-ball era, but Shreyas Iyer will not be a part of it.

With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having stepped away from Test cricket, the spotlight is firmly on Shubman Gill - who takes over the captaincy. But the omission of Iyer from the squad has started a debate.

Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to the title last year and has now led Punjab Kings to the top of the table in the ongoing season. His recent form and success over the past 12 months have sparked discussions on his exclusion from the Indian T20I and Test teams.

He is seen by many as a strong contender to make a return to the longer format. Amid his omission, several voices - including India legend R Ashwin believe a comeback could be around the corner, particularly if India’s current batters don’t perform in England.

What did R Ashwin say about Shreyas Iyer’s Test comeback?

Speaking on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin addressed a question from cricket analyst Vimal Waa about whether Iyer should have been part of the Test setup - given his recent success and experience. Ashwin replied that he wouldn't be surprised to see Iyer back in the red-ball team soon.

"I wouldn't put it past Shreyas Iyer to make a comeback very soon in the Test team as well," said Ashwin.

Ashwin pointed out that Iyer has played Tests in England before and has shown strong character in recent months.

"Let's not forget that he played in the Edgbaston Test. A player like Shreyas doesn’t need to be tested in A series again. He has the quality," he added.

Ashwin further suggested that if India’s batters underperform in England, the home Test season could offer a perfect opening for Iyer’s return.

"If the Indian team’s batting doesn’t go well in England, I think there’s a very good chance he will be back during the home Test season," the former Indian spinner noted.

Ashwin praised Iyer's comeback after setbacks and said his form can't be ignored for long.

"He’s playing really well, especially after all those setbacks. You can’t overlook a player like that for too long," he concluded.
