"Abhimanyu Easwaran dropped from India Test squad due to his father's strong statements" - Ex-India star makes shocking claim image

Abhimanyu Easwaran's absence from India's squad for the upcoming two-Test series against the West Indies has stirred debate with former cricketer Kris Srikkanth offering a surprising explanation.

The Bengal opener - who has been around the Test setup for nearly two years, once again missed out on making his long-awaited debut. While selectors cited team balance as the reason, Srikkanth suggested there might be more to the story.

Kris Srikkanth links Abhimanyu Easwaran's omission to his father's remarks

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth said Easwaran's father may have played a part in the snub.

"I feel bad for Abhimanyu Easwaran. I think his father made some strong statements (after England), and maybe that's why they've dropped him now. But Ajit Agarkar's reasoning on not needing a reserve opener at home was fair," Srikkanth said.

The "strong statements" refer to Ranganathan Easwaran's comments earlier this year.

After his son was overlooked in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England, he publicly questioned the team management's approach, accusing them of favouring IPL performers over consistent first-class cricketers. Easwaran first earned a call-up in December 2022 but has yet to play a Test.

During that period, as many as 15 other players have made their debut - including Sai Sudharsan, who got his chance against England earlier this year after a prolific IPL season despite modest red-ball numbers.

Ajit Agarkar explains selection stance

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar offered a straightforward explanation. He said the selectors didn't feel the need for a reserve opener in home conditions - adding that Easwaran could be drafted in quickly if required.

The first Test between India and West Indies begins on October 2 in Ahmedabad with the second scheduled for October 10 in Delhi. For Easwaran, the wait for a maiden cap continues.
