Over the past few weeks, questions have swirled about the duo's form and future after India's struggles early in the ODI series against Australia.
But de Villiers believes the criticism is misplaced, especially when both players have carried Indian cricket for over a decade and continue to deliver on the biggest stage.
AB de Villiers defends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from critics
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former South Africa captain didn't mince words when addressing those targeting Kohli and Rohit. He said some critics only appear late in players' careers to spread negativity rather than celebrate their contributions.
"I don't know what it is about people. I don't know if I can call them people. Cockroaches climbing out of their holes as soon as players get towards the backend of their careers. Why? Why do you want to pour negative energy into players that have given their lives for their country and this beautiful game of cricket? This is the perfect time to celebrate them," de Villiers said.

He added that both players have faced "a lot of criticism" lately and deserve far more respect and admiration for what they have achieved.
Kohli and Rohit silence doubters in Sydney
The comments come after both stars produced a statement performance in Sydney. Rohit Sharma's unbeaten 121 and Virat Kohli's composed 74* guided India to a commanding nine-wicket win, helping the visitors avoid a whitewash against Australia.
Their partnership not only sealed a win but also reminded fans why the duo remain central to India's cricketing identity — even as speculation about their international futures continues.
