India's No. 3 position in Test cricket has long been considered one of the most important roles in the batting line-up. But under Gautam Gambhir's leadership, that spot has seen surprising instability.

With just seven wins in 18 Tests, India are under pressure to find stability in the No. 3 role. Sai Sudharsan was previously handed the role during the England tour.
However, he has now been replaced as Washington Sundar was promoted to No. 3 in the 1st Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens.

In the second Test at Edgbaston, Karun Nair was slotted in, becoming the sixth player to bat at that position. Now at Eden Gardens, Sundar becomes the seventh to attempt to cement his spot in one of the team;s most critical positions.
