In her second season at the helm of the Tennessee Lady Volunteers, coach Kim Caldwell is doubling down on a “hockey subs” style of play. The frequent rotations, high tempo and constant pressure is new, but not to Caldwell.

What some critics view as gimmicky, the Tennessee coach has embraced. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Caldwell’s approach on depth and endurance was part of the conversation. This allows her players to stay fresh on the floor and sustain defensive energy throughout the game.

The Lady Vols strategy stands out in the crowded women’s college basketball landscape, and the coaching staff says it matches the athletic identity they are building at Tennessee.

As for the Players, they have responded by running a fast paced style of play and the sense of urgency it brings. While some traditionalists question whether such a system can sustain success or whether it will leave the team vulnerable late in games, Caldwell says its innovativeness is part of the draw.

“We wanted something that they couldn’t prepare for every night,” she told SI. With early results showing competitive games and improved depth usage, Caldwell’s experiment may prove to be influential.

No. 14 Tennessee is now 4-1 with 80-77 loss to No. 9 NC State. Not bad for an early-season look and Caldwell leading the charge in a new era.
